All others might just want a pretty bird to look at, so here’s to being ready for the annual bird toast!
This last weekend I went a traveling (more details next week) & visited two towns not pronounced the way they are spelled. I was mocked for my pronunciation difficulties by my Dear family. Four places in Texas I know are said different than spelled.
Mexia or Mahayah?
Boerne or Bernie?
Buda or Boodah?
Gruene or Green?
All are pronounced the second way but spelled the first way. Where have you traveled that was a speaking nightmare?
I’ll end this with a joke. Two men are driving to South Texas. They start to argue about how to pronounce Mexia. One swore it was Mexia & the other swore it was Mahayah. They stopped for lunch at the local DQ for lunch. Exasperated, one of the men turns & looks at the waitress. He tells her to tell that fool how you pronounce the name of this place! She turns, looks, and lowers her head to his and says real slowly, “it’s called dare-ee queeen.”
Last week I covered the second half of that childhood taunt, talking about weddings. I had a big to do this last Saturday for family & they spawned that topic.
This last Sunday I had a baby shower & the Saturday before last. I’ve hit my stride of many to do’s. So far not broke, but getting there!
These following points are baby shower thoughts & tips… feel free to add your own in the comment section.
* Baby 1: The hair bow should not be bigger than the baby’s head. Common sense people!
* Baby 2: How to be better parent books are to only be given if specifically asked for. Be nice & remember to keep your mouth shut, their parents will do enough ‘teaching’.
* Baby 3: Diaper poo guessing games are not everyone’s cup of tea, do not make them sniff melted snickers if they don’t want too.
* Baby 4: 5,000 onesies in size 3 months is nice … unless the baby is 12 lbs at birth. Buy different sizes to grow into.
* Baby 5: Never ask another woman at the baby shower when she’s due too. A) not her shower & B) she’s probably not expecting.
* & Baby 6: Do not give the mother a Buddha statue to help remind her of her last 9 months. Of course, if the baby’s room is Zen-ified, that might be okay.
Ever heard of Best of The Road by Rand McNally? Well, my little town has been cream of the crop for the most fun category! We’re cool you know. But the teams leave this week & head out to hit all the towns across America to judge how cool we really are.
If you want to follow the teams on Facebook click here.
If you want to follow the Denton Main Street during the event click here.
We even twitter here! @downtowndenton
The article that shows hometown pride? We are Awesome.
Where would you send BOTR team in Denton?
This is the digital age, or so my alarm clock tells me. It means pre perked coffee pots, morning texts from SnuggleBear, & booking travels by mouse clicks.
There are plenty of travel discount sites as I can tell from all the commercials my DVR lets me skip. Such as Shatner’s priceline.com, the gnome’s travelocity.com, the bad dancers from hotels.com & the creepy dumb commercials (the pupil dilation was freaky) from Kayak.com.
Airlines like to add their 2¢ with remarks that they don’t offer lower flights anywhere but their own sites (*ahem* American Airlines & Southwest).
I don’t get to travel often, easy job & dog limit my times, but two sites/apps I adore aren’t listed above, but below!
How many of you know of Groupon’s travel deals? They offer so many places! If you poke around you even run across offers in your own city place, perfect trips for affordable & fun staycations. Some of the international trips include airfare, mainly down in the islands of sand & sea.
My fun app when driving is Hotel Tonight. If you’re traveling on spur of the moment or just planning a mini trip within a days drive, look here first! They’re expanding cities with service often, & the deals are made available at noon CST. You can book rooms at slashed prices for that night or more at better costs! I even got a $25 credit for getting the app & for any friend I recommend who books a stay somewhere.
Travel is expensive, frustrating at times, & a nightmare to organize. Thankfully, well run travel sites & apps can lower the stress & save a little green along the way.
What app or travel discount site do you love?
Some travelling Thursdays aren’t of me going far away or doing expensive things, mainly because I don’t have the funds or much time for the great big world around me. But thankfully I can still do the little trips. The local things. The community things.
Something I did tonight.
I visited the American Legion Post #71 for their first Field of Heroes opening ceremony. This honor ceremony celebrated POW, MIA, KIA, & Veterans. There was an Army Colorguard to present the flags & God Almighty had a strong wind whipping the 125+ flags in a fervor.
To participate, you donated $20 for an American flag to be flown this weekend in honor of a current, past, or personal hero. Name, branch, etc. I dedicated it to my cousin Row who served Air Force until recent retirement. At the end of Tuesday you are able to pick up the flag & take home to fly.
Here’s a few shots:
How will you honor & celebrate this Memorial Day weekend?
If you’re curious as to what I’m talking about then you might not be from the Dallas area. The largest free music festival I know of (Part of 35 Denton costs) hosted in a large city park with multiple venues at once is once again this weekend!
Starting Friday the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival unravels a slewof activities, booths, games, food, artists, sculptures, & of course musicians! The only thing not allowed sadly is Fido, so please leave Fido, Fluffy, & Mr. Tiddlywinks in your a/c’d house. Their festival is around the corner in June at the Dog Days of Denton.
Live near Dart trains? Buy a regional pass & sail on up here, get off on the last DCTA stop & walk 3 blocks (or hop a bus if they’re running). Located in Quakertown Park, it’s snuggled up behind the City Hall, Senior Citizen Center, City Pool & Community City on Bell/McKinney intersection. Parking is limited so get there early or prepare for neighborhood parking options! If you need a new rug, a garden doodad, unique coffee coasters or just a finishing piece for your art collection you’ll find it here. It is a Mecca to the musically inclined & artsy alike. Kids can bang on real drums & not your good pots & pans at a kid’s magic booth (the magic being that it wears your kids out!) Or stop by a sizzling food booth spouting local cuisine. You’ll find something for everyone because two buildings filled with woodwork, grandma’s quilts, charcoal sketches done on site, framed pictures of velvet Elvis, fairy fantasies, natural nature or microwaveable potato socks meets even the pickiest gift shopper. Bring your cash & card & prepare to complete your Christmas shopping in advance!
Headliners are as follows:
Lee Ritenour Friday 9:00 Jazz Stage
Los Lonely Boys Saturday 9:00 Jazz Stage
Brave Combo Sunday 7:00 Jazz Stage
Honorable Mention: Denton Hand bell Choir Preforms Sunday at 1. This group of adults are a joy to hear & they use their talents to make many others happy in nursing homes & more. Please look them up while you’re there!
